So we all know mascots are huge in North American HE, giving lots of content opportunities for organic social. But how about in the UK?

Here at Newcastle we’ve tried on and off to make our mascot Percy the Lion a “thing” on our channels but have struggled with consistency (getting someone to wear the suit is a tough sell sometimes).

Are there any other UK/European unis here that have had mascot success on social?

Here’s a “study with me” video we made with our Mascot pre-covid for reference

You’re right, mascots don’t have the same presence in UK HE as they do in North America. From what I’ve seen, they work best here when tied to big events (sports, graduations, welcome week) rather than as a constant channel presence. Some unis also use animated/digital versions to get around the “costume” issue, which keeps things more consistent.

I’ve only really seen tied to sporting events. The folks behind the Oregon Duck socials do a really good job of being on trend, which can be appealing to college students, if you’re looking for inspiration: https://www.instagram.com/theoregonduck/
