Question

How Do You Craft Engaging Content for Specific Demographics?

Hi everyone,

Crafting content that resonates with specific demographics can be challenging. What strategies have you found effective for engaging, say, millennials versus baby boomers on social media? Any successful campaign stories or tips to share?

Thanks!

Great question😃 ! For millennials, authenticity is key. They love content that’s relatable, humorous, and visually engaging, Think TikTok, Instagram, and influencer partnerships. Successful campaigns often revolve around shared values, like sustainability.

For baby boomers, focus on trust and value. They prefer straightforward, informative content on platforms like Facebook, and appreciate long-form videos or articles that provide value, like health tips or product benefits.

Tailor your tone and platform choice, and you’ll hit the right note for each group!

Great question, as I’m going through this now with a changing industry (boomers aging out, predominately Gen X). I’m having trouble connecting with an industry downturn. It’s finance-specific and B2B so it’s always been challenging, but more so now.

I would take a sample size of your audience and search their posts and tone of voice before going into assumptions such as, “Gen X has an affinity for 80’s/90’s nostalgia.” I found Semrush’s recent webinar with Jack Appleby on establishing a brand voice for social was helpful, with the archetypes exercise.

Experiment! Explore trends across generations and create posts based on each. Then analyze their performance by looking at watch times, engagement, and whether viewers stay until the end. Over time, patterns will emerge and help you refine your approach. Some posts may flop while others succeed, but the algorithm will adapt to what resonates most. Pay close attention, especially in the first hour after posting, since this time is the most crucial according to recent data from Meta.
