Careless People: A New Exposé Book on Meta’s Power and Failures

Hi!

I just finished reading Careless People: A Cautionary Tale of Power, Greed, and Lost Idealism by Sarah Wynn-Williams, Meta’s former Director of Public Policy. I’d love to know if anyone else has read it or plans to.

This book has me really grappling with my role in social media, especially since I work with clients who advertise on these platforms. It’s a pretty damning look at Meta’s foreign policy, their impact on the 2016 election, and what they knew (or didn’t know). I think it’s an essential read for anyone in the field—because, candidly, we understand these platforms better than anyone. We should be speaking up about what’s happening on them, from the rise of extremism to rage bait and misinformation.

There are also some really thought-provoking takeaways about being a woman in the workplace and the idea of silence as a means to succeed. It made me reflect on how corporate culture often discourages speaking out, especially for women in leadership.

I’d love to hear your thoughts if you’ve read it—or if it’s on your list. How do you think social media professionals should be responding to what’s currently happening in tech and on social media platforms?

Thanks for the recommendation. I’ll have to add it to my cart. Always looking for social media reading recommendations.

I have not read it but I do sometimes grapple with these questions as a social media professional. What I try to do is compartmentalize and only use social media for work purposes and avoid it for personal use.

Listening to it now; it’s very thought provoking. I’ve found myself getting frustrated with her at points until I remember I was also in her shoes and made some of the same choices.

If you like this, you’d probably also enjoy The Chaos Machine by Max Fisher. It talks about a lot of similar things, but from the industry as a whole - not just focused on Facebook.
