I think the biggest thing is the misconception that Compliance will always say no to anything good that you want to do or that the Compliance team is your enemy. A lot of people need to reframe that and understand that Compliance is there to help protect you and your company, which is a good thing! And if your ideas are good and you have a good Compliance team, it usually isn’t a “no,” but a “yes and…include a disclaimer, change this word, etc.”

Befriend your Compliance team and educate them on what you do! They are not marketing experts. You are! You may need to spend a few extra minutes to break down for them exactly how something is going to be used or viewed by the consumer for them to give you better advice on how to make it work within the regulations. Then you’ll end up with a better final product and everyone is happy!

I think ​@marisa.stephens has the right approach. Partner with Compliance, hash things out until the right (brand-safe) idea has been reached. Approaching them antagonistically brings the potential cost of productivity, creativity, and internal cohesion.
