Question

Is Anyone Using WeAre8?

Forum|alt.badge.img

Has anyone else heard of “WeAre8” or actually using it?

It’s a social platform that’s been around for a couple of years and bills its self as “The People’s Platform” with minimal data tracking, strong moderation and paying people for the ads they consume.

I’m aware of WeAre9. @thematthorne, it’s, as you said, designed for minimal data tracking, strong moderation, removing problematic algorithms, and taking ads out of the equation, and by their own assertion, a pro-consumer/user experience overall.

Are you thinking of trying it or bringing a client (or two) to the platform?

Not thought about it in much detail yet. Just seeing if anyone else had dipped their toes. Everyone’s banging on about Lemon and Bluesky but this one hasn’t crept in to the public as much.

Need to have a play personally before going any further

I mean I’m still not seeing much traction with Bluesky or Lemon8. We’re banking on Threads, where we’re finally seeing some meaningful engagement numbers for the new social that’s going to have staying power.

@thematthorne I did a little digging, and it looks like WeAre8 draws about 1.6 million active monthly users. Obviously not the biggest pool to work with. But since so much of their marketing/advertising is opt-in, I suspect their audience is more engaged because they choose to engage with a brand, an ad, an influencer, etc.

Might dip a toe in and see how it goes

This was my first introduction to Weare8. My caution, as it has been for other platforms, is bringing a brand to a platform where the community is unresponsive to that kind of content. While I do think you can build an organic strategy to fit most environments, it’s still important to consider what your goals are compared to the general community attitude. A platform that’s generally anti-advertising may come with other hostility towards brand content.

We’re lucky, as a university we don’t have to worry about being a “brand” shoving our way in to a space. We’re just looking for our community and meeting them where they are
