Any tips on creating a portfolio for social media work?

Hi everyone,

My name is Anna and I’m a recent college graduate working in my first full-time job as a social media specialist. As I create more social media content, I’m wondering whether I should put together a portfolio of my work to share with future employers or if that’s only helpful for freelancers. If it is beneficial for me, then what should a portfolio look like, and how should I go about sharing one if it’s not specifically requested by the employer?

If you have portfolios, I’d love to hear what you include in yours! Thanks!

I use Gondola, which allows me to track posts that I’ve worked on for brands and provides collective analytics on those that I’ve contributed to: https://gondola.cc/

I think if you know you are not planning on staying with the company you are with right now. You need to keep weekly reporting to make sure you can show that growth or creative for later employers.

You can keep a running Slides doc - In this you can have screenshots of posting, along with the captions and then add in all the metrics that same with this post to keep track of this long term to eventually give to a future employee to see how you do.

Reporting will be huge to see the growth that you can bring to a company and where you can take it.

That’s very helpful, thank you!

Would love to revive this thread. I recently updated my portfolio, which is mostly content based, but curious to know how people have approached a portfolio for social media manager roles.

Mine is online at travissandoval.com. I also have a PDF version that goes a bit deeper on social metrics.

Hoping to revive this thread… I need to update my portfolio and curious if others would share examples of how they’re framing their work.

@lisa.rodrigo  👋 Love seeing this thread revived, Lisa! Before I offer my two cents, I’d ask what your goals are and work backwards from there.

Ex. My role has me leading content marketing for a B2B SaaS company, so I’ve shaped my website/portfolio around campaigns and narratives rather than single posts or accounts. Social is woven into the bigger story: what the goal was, how social helped, and what changed for the business.

If the job you’re going for is purely social or attached to another marketing function (ex. creator, copywriting, etc.), it could look really different. Audience matters too. What I’d suggest for someone pitching to B2B teams might look different from someone going after B2C brands.

A few things I think hold up no matter what:

  1. Say what each piece was meant to do. Each platform does something different for each brand, so summarize the goal, method & results clearly alongside the work.
  2. Show the evolution. Before-and-after screenshots of pages and performance, from when you started to when your impact paid off, say more than any single viral post.
  3. Make the viewer feel something. Social media is a lot more emotional than we give it credit for. Show that you know which visuals tap into feelings. It’s also a quick way to help a hiring manager understand how people might feel seeing a page you ran.

What kind of role are you hoping it lands you? Happy to share more once I know!
